Octoberville 2008

"Every year since 2005, Octoberville has topped the charts with SL's largest Halloween playground with lots of fun and prizes including haunted house, maze, autumn forest with marshmallow roasting and ghost stories, haunted train ride, and SL's largest scavenger Hunt and LOTS more! Come trick-or-treat at Octoberville!" This line taken from the group, Octoberville, couldn't say it better. Beginning its 4th Halloween season, Octoberville has some new things up it's sleeve this year. I sat down with one of the creators, Master Kaos, and asked him a few questions for you. Enjoy the conversation, I know I did. But most importantly, get over to Octoberville, pick up your sleuth notecbook, and begin your Octoberville journey!

Jenn Hienrichs: So you create this each year for SL residents...
Master Kaos: True.
Master Kaos: lol
Jenn Hienrichs: what do you think makes this such a wonderfully fun attraction year after year?
Master Kaos: Well I like to think that its because this place comes from my heart. That might sound cliche' but this is really my warm fuzzy place I guess. I grew up in a very small town out in the country.
Master Kaos: It really has a magical feel to it
Master Kaos: The scavenger hunt has a following all of its own as well. lol. people are always looking for something to actually do in SL. something challenging.
Jenn Hienrichs: How much of the build is the same year to year, and how much do you have to create from scratch? (not the scavenger hunt part but the actual build)
Master Kaos: well I actually like taking many of the same elements from years past and incorporating them . I'm nostalgic. lol.  So far though every year I have created the haunted house from scratch. I do however, incorporate things from year to year that people said were really fun or scary or entertaining.
Master Kaos: I like to come up with new things...but i also sort of have a picture of octoberville in my head that i don't want to get too terribly far away from
Jenn Hienrichs: what elements of the scavenger hunt do you change year to year?
Master Kaos: we have definitely upped the numbers of items to find from the first two years. the third and fourth year each had a hundred. The only thing we really changed this year is that it has more of a questing feel about it. you have to talk to "residents" of octoberville to turn in quests, etc. has more of a game feel to it.
Master Kaos: Octoberville started from simply the love of autumn and halloween. We never set out to make any kind of money on it and we only have a donations box out.
Master Kaos: We are a family. everyone that has worked on octoberville lives together and eats dinner together.
Jenn Hienrichs: :)
Jenn Hienrichs: do stores ever ask to put their location here, and pay you $L to get their halloween related items out?
Master Kaos: yes, quite a few. this I built a few shops in to octoberville so that we could have a place for people to get costumes, fun stuff.
Jenn Hienrichs: this runs through the whole month right?
Jenn Hienrichs: til the end of oct?
Master Kaos: yes we always run thru October and usually break it down during November. This year we are going to leave octoberville up and running after Oct. because for all the years past people have begged us to leave it.  I have learned over time that we definitely have a fan base.
Jenn Hienrichs: what becomes of the sim when it's not "Octoberville"?
Master Kaos: we play. lol. its been a thick jungle with tree houses. beach resort, whatever we feel like at the time really.  October use to be the only month that we would really run any sort of "attraction".
Jenn Hienrichs: and how long does it take for you to set it all back up again?
Master Kaos: to set octoberville up it takes about 2 months of off and on work.
Master Kaos: we have gotten progressively faster over time. :)
Jenn Hienrichs: i imagine! what a chore though!!
Master Kaos: well luckily I have become very fast at building in SL. lol.
Jenn Hienrichs: can you tell me the names of the people directly responsible for Octoberville in addition to you and Cherub?
Master Kaos: Me, Cherub, Nathan Oddfellow are Pixeltrix.   We also had
a lot of help from Trinity Pink , a family member and Wordsworth
Scribe, a family member and writer of the Story this year that is
featured in the hunt.
Master Kaos: there is one new thing added to octoberville this year....it is a sad one but important to mention. out in the field behind us is a memorial to Gisela Vale. she was an octoberville fan and elite in our groups. she was taken from us not too long ago.
Jenn Hienrichs: Oh, I'm so sorry to hear.
Master Kaos: I also have special thanks to give to Taylor Flanagan and Friday Dagger for helping me around here with photographs, flickr site, the Crowbar.
Jenn Hienrichs: oh i'll link to the flickr site
Jenn Hienrichs: what's the crowbar?
Master Kaos: great :)
Master Kaos: whats the Crowbar???
Master Kaos: oh my
Master Kaos: lol
Master Kaos: you cant go yet
Jenn Hienrichs: ok.
Master Kaos: Crowbar is one of my favorite places in Octoberville
Master Kaos: It is the local hang out. I built crowbar at last years octoberville and it has grown in to a hot spot. Its a lovely lil nightclub with a dark twist. I DJ events live every night from there.
Jenn Hienrichs: oh super,
Jenn Hienrichs: i think i remember it from last year. Thanks so much! It's been fun
Master Kaos: you too! thanks
